music and me
Hello! My name is Savannah and I’m a freshman at Converse planning on majoring in English (although I’m still unsure what exactly I plan to focus on as a career)! I've played the violin for 6 years but decided to take a break from performing arts for the time being. I love experimenting and trying out new things especially when it comes to music! I’ve tried learning other instruments like the piano, acoustic guitar, and even launchpad but have never followed through with them (although I’m planning on learning the electric guitar someday soon). Music overall has been a big part of my life and I’ve been open to all types of music due to my family loving a wide range of genres! My mom grew up with classic/funk rock and heavy metal, my dad grew up with bluegrass country and 80s pop, and my brother was into 90s-early 2000s alternative/punk rock and 40s pop. I’ve never been picky with what comes on the radio!
1. Most recently I’ve been listening to a mixture of indie folk/folk rock/psychedelic rock and also jazz/blues. It’s hard to choose any specific songs but I’ll narrow it down to three!
First off I have A Song is Born by Naomi Lewis! This song always puts me in a nice and calming mood and I love putting it on when doing any sort of work! Some of my other favorite artists right now include Carpenters, The Cranberries, and Faye Webster, but I thought Naomi Lewis deserved more recognition.
I love settling down to a jazz/blues radio station or playlist when I'm going to bed or being productive! Any song by Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Julie London, or Nat King Cole is never a skip! One of my favorite songs ever is Misty, specifically the Ella Fitzgerald version!
On the complete opposite side of the spectrum I have Shanghai by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard! This song leans more into psychedelic rock and almost all of the artist's songs are fun to put on when I'm playing video games or doing any mindless task!
2. One song that is significant to me is Take Me Home by Phil Collins. I first heard about him from the movie Tarzan and didn't know he made any other music besides in that soundtrack. My dad actually introduced me to his other music and we would listen to Take Me Home the most often on the way to and from school. It really fills my heart with warmth to listen to now. It's very nostalgic to me and reminds me of childhood memories and how fast time really does go by.
3. One genre of music I'm not the biggest fan of is Country Pop. I don't know why but the sound just isn't that appealing to me. I think one reason why is because I'm from the south, I've had to listen to this music a LOT. One time when I went on vacation to Charleston, my cousin made sure that was the ONLY songs we listened to and it almost drove me crazy. They specifically played the song Meant to Be by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line on repeat.
Hey Savannah I really like that you listen to the blues and slow jazz because I think that one genre of music everyone should listen too.I really connect with jazz and blues because it has deep meanings behind it and it makes you feel comfortable sometimes cause it calms you down. I know a lot of people don't like country music but me personally,I love country music but certain people at the same time because some country music doesn't interest me at all but other do like Kane Brown "heaven" its a very good song and another one is Brett Young "Lady" but everyone has there own taste. But I really like your blog overall.
ReplyDeleteHi Savannah! This post is insane! (In the best way possible.) Your music taste is so eclectic and well-rounded in a way that you could only inherit from really cool parents, haha. I love how all of these songs are so different, but System of a Down making an appearance is really interesting! "B.Y.O.B." has to be your pick most different from the rest. I couldn't imagine playing that on Guitar Hero, I think I'd break a finger. System of a Down has a very special place in my heart, but I can't listen to them for too long because his vocals are so... theatrical, haha. My favorite of your picks has to be "Shanghai" by King Gizz. My favorite album of theirs is definitely "Infest the Rats' Nest", but their calmer, more electronic music is always such a pleasant surprise. They've got to be crazy talented to have such a diverse discography. Thank you for sharing! Much love. :)
ReplyDeleteI love some of the music artists you listen too! I also listen to the Cranberries and Faye Webster. That sort of music always calms me and makes me happy! One thing that's interesting is that you also don't like country pop, I totally agree! I like country and pop separate, but together is definitely not my thing!
ReplyDeleteHey Savannah, I really like your taste in music. It's a breath of fresh air from what i'm accustom to listening to. Misty is a great calming song. I do disagree with your dislike for Country pop. I'm not a fan at all I just don't dislike it. I honestly find most songs in the genre funny. It's so cool to see someone else who played guitar hero growing up. My favorite song to play was Cliffs of dover.
ReplyDeleteHi Savannah I really enjoyed Misty because it felt really calming and told a story. What I found interesting was King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, I found this interesting because I have not been exposed to this type of music before, but I will have to say it was not my favorite but thank you for intruding it to me!
ReplyDeleteHey Savannah, the most interesting part of your post was how jazz and blues have become your go-to genres for relaxing and being productive. It’s intriguing to see how music by these artists is in your daily routines, creating a peaceful environment. What I liked the most was your mention of "Take Me Home" by Phil Collins and how it connects you to memories with your dad. I also liked how you like System Of A Down which is one of my favorite bands!
