music and us

Ever since I was young, I loved listening to different types of music and experimenting with the different sounds around me. I don't think I've ever found a type of music that I hate. I can't wait to use this opportunity to share some of the interesting music around the world I have been exposed to! Starting off strong with some Ethiopian Jazz/Funk/Soul! The musician I'm specifically going to talk about is Hailu Mergia. He is a famous keyboardist, accordionist, composer, and arranger that is now located in Washington DC. At one point in his life in Ethiopia, there was a certain dictatorship that created lots of music censorship, especially towards religious and vocal music. All lyrics had to praise the government, nothing else. A way Mergia found to get by this was to create instrumental music. One great song of his that I love is "Anchin Kfu Ayinkash", which he create while in the Dahlak Band. I highly recommend listening if you need something simple and soot...

music and rituals

It was very hard for me to think of a single ritual or tradition that I've done with memorable music. The only weddings I've been to were when I was very young, I can't think of any funerals I've been to, and the only graduation song I remember is Celebration by Kool & The Gang.  For my blog, I decided to talk about different Christmas songs that I hear around the holiday season! Although I don't have any specific traditional parties or gatherings around that time, except eating at my grandparents house, there's a collection of different things that I'd like to share! Golden Oldies A great genre of Christmas music are the absolute classics of the 50s/60s! Because one of the only Christmas celebrations I have is with my grandparents, we just have to listen to good ol' classics!  One song is Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee! Fun fact, the electric guitarist from this song, Hank Garland, is actually from Cowpens, South Carolina! Floyd...

music and family

Image
I'd heavily attribute my diverse music taste to my family. My dad grew up listening to bluegrass/country and 80s pop, while my mom grew up listening to rock n roll and metal. I thought some fun people to interview would be my grandparents, since they've all had such different musical experiences! (For less confusion for whose on my moms/dads side, I will call my dad's dad PD and my moms parents PM and GM) What type of music did you grow up listening to? Any specific songs or artists you remember? PD : I only listened to Bluegrass, one song I remember went "When I Got To Heaven, I Didn't See Anybody I Knew" PM: I had to listen to Earl Scruggs, Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones.... I HAD to listen to it, I didn't want to. GM: Bluegrass, my mother loved listening to Floyd Cramer, a ragtime pianist at the time, and her favorite song was Begin the Beguine. Has your music taste changed over the years? How and why? Any favorite artists you remember? How did people arou...

music and gender

Image
I know many people who have read my blog aren't the biggest fans of rock/metal music, but when talking about gender topics in music, what immediately came to mind was the male dominance of the rock and metal scenes. Even without knowing the exact reason why, I can guess very easily some very big reasons for this. For one, the sound of these two genres in general are considered very "manly". The hardcore vocals and intense instrumentals really intimidated the majority. Metal and rock screamed  power, figuratively and literally. The theme's in many of these genres' songs were very rebellious and resistant, not very "lady-like" topics for women to get caught up in. It didn't help that men in the industry encouraged this ideal of women not belonging. The only way for women to join in on the fun was to become a "groupie", following groups for shallow and sexual reasons.  When it comes to women in rock/metal now, you have to think of two differen...

music and me

Hello! My name is Savannah and I’m a freshman at Converse planning on majoring in English (although I’m still unsure what exactly I plan to focus on as a career)! I've played the violin for 6 years but decided to take a break from performing arts for the time being. I love experimenting and trying out new things especially when it comes to music! I’ve tried learning other instruments like the piano, acoustic guitar, and even launchpad but have never followed through with them (although I’m planning on learning the electric guitar someday soon). Music overall has been a big part of my life and I’ve been open to all types of music due to my family loving a wide range of genres! My mom grew up with classic/funk rock and heavy metal, my dad grew up with bluegrass country and 80s pop, and my brother was into 90s-early 2000s alternative/punk rock and 40s pop. I’ve never been picky with what comes on the radio! 1. Most recently I’ve been listening to a mixture of indie folk/folk rock/psyc...
